Winter may be here, but at Powerchex we have exciting news to share with you. This month our company was shortlisted for three awards, including “Business of the Year”. The results will be announced at the end of November, so, watch this space.
On another note, we are absolutely thrilled to have Arjun Medhi, Staff Fraud Adviser for CIFAS as our author this month. CIFAS is the UK’s Fraud Prevention Service and we are proud to be members of this worthwhile organisation. Arjun is extremely knowledgeable on the subject of staff fraud and he has volunteered his advice to any of our readers who have specific queries. He can be reached at Staff.fraud@cifas.org.uk
Finally, the Securities and Investment Institute has launched a new service called “Integrity Matters”. This case-based service provides an effective way for HR and Compliance departments to assess the integrity of staff through scenarios which evaluate their judgement. The Securities and Investment Institute has kindly agreed to let our readers test the service for free. Below you can find the log in details. Successful completion of the workshop and test earns you up to 2 hours active learning CPD, which is recorded automatically if you are a member of the SII CPD Scheme.
Insider Fraud - Should you be worried? By Arjun Medhi, Staff Fraud Adviser, CIFAS |

While it goes without saying that most staff in any organisation are honest and trustworthy, there is a growing awareness and concern about the very real threat posed by the few who act dishonestly to defraud their employer. Fraud in the workplace can lead to an organisation experiencing a substantial internal impact, financial losses and unquantifiable damage to reputation. Most importantly, insider fraud is increasingly one of the biggest concerns for employers: Deloitte’s 2007 Global Financial Services Security Survey found that 91% of the respondents (from a range of 169 major global financial institutions) were concerned about the risks arising internally.
Insider fraud can take many forms: from deception through to stealing customer data and selling it on to organised criminals. Even at recruitment stage, fraud can be a problem, with lies included in application forms or on CVs.

The Securities & Investment Institute, which is well known for its commitment to establishing the highest standards of integrity and ethics has recently launched its new e-learning module IntegrityMatters in an event at the Mansion House, where Stephen Green, Group Chairman of HSBC was the keynote speaker.
This module, which contains a workshop section and a test, builds upon the cases published last year in the very successful book, Integrity at Work in financial services.
IntegrityMatters is possibly unique in that users are not faced with a straightforward set of questions but undertake six case studies, in which the questions asked are dependant upon the response given to the previous question. Consequently, to achieve an outcome in each scenario, users will face between two and seven questions, dependant upon their choice of answer.
SII is offering non members FREE access to the workshop until 15th November by using the link below
