    Panellists:

James Buchan’s books include Frozen Desire: an Inquiry into the Meaning of Money, Crowded with Genius and, most recently, Adam Smith and the
    Pursuit of Perfect Liberty

Brandon Davies, Managing Director, GARP Risk Academy
Martin Wolf CBE, associate editor and chief economics commentator at the Financial Times

    Topic:

"Speaking generally, all moneys are heading towards worthlessness; the only question is whether they run or walk" (James Buchan)

In January 1994, author and columnist James Buchan wrote the first article in an occasional series heralding a new golden age of low inflation (‘The discreet return of the bourgeoisie’, The Spectator).  Observing recent developments such as the collapse of Communism and the influx of cheap imports from the Far East, he sought to confront one of the future’s most perplexing economic riddles: would prices stay stable over a longer period (as in the nineteenth century); or would inflation - the capital experience of the twentieth century - return like a spectre to haunt the twenty first?  Advising readers to buy an antique, long – derided government security called Consols - “the best investment advice ever given gratis by anybody, anywhere, ever” (‘Welcome back to the 19th century’, New Statesman, 2 April 1999) – Buchan saw Britain developing into a rentier economy: “the revolutions of the inflation era are coming to an end.  British society will congeal around its new rich.” Fourteen years on, with the disintegration of the NICE decade and the potentially explosive mixture of a global banking crisis and rising commodity prices, many of these more optimistic conclusions are being called into question.

A team of eminent panellists will discuss the recent history of low inflation in the UK, before examining what investors should be doing to prepare for such
    potentially epoch defining changes.

    Chairman:

Christopher Jones – Warner FSI, Director of Playing Hamlet Ltd, consultant to Defaqto Ltd and senior adviser to the Securities & Investment Institute
